Welcome to the Web site of Kathleen Vaughan, writer and scholar, visual artist, and teacher. For some purposes, I'm 'aka (also known as) redhanded,' hence my URL, akaredhanded.com.
This site is my virtual portfolio, and so includes descriptions, excerpts, and images of some of the most exciting work that I've done myself or (in the case of my teaching) helped others generate. I describe how I addressed each project's particular challenges, so you'll have some information on my approach.
You'll also find highlights of new activities and adventures, as well as a profile of who I am... and where 'redhanded' comes from.

These pages should give you a good idea of the scope and direction of my work as...
-
A writer and scholar whose work addresses art, education, cultural industries, and broadcasting.
My own interdisciplinary scholarly work explores art as a mode of knowing, and links my own hands-on 'making' with research and theories of cultural studies, feminism, urban and environmental studies, visual art and aesthetics and critical pedagogy. I write about my work in scholarly publications and present papers at conferences. I have earned my PhD in Education for a multi-modal (art plus text) dissertation entitled Finding Home: Knowledge, Collage, and the Local Environments.
As a freelance consultant, I develop television scripts, speeches, marketing and advocacy materials, fundraising text, television license application, curatorial and magazine articles, essays and more. I engage in research on issues of education, broadcasting, social policy, and the arts and culture.
As a personal project, my site includes The Auggie Chronicles, an on-line journal of occasional essays about the pleasures and perils of being the human companion to my dog, Auggie.
-
A visual artist whose practice consists of making and exhibiting artworks that delve into issues fundamental to the human condition.
I explore themes like family and community connections, wounding and healing, and the experience of place. My visual work- two- and three-dimensional mixed media- is exhibited in solo and group shows, and used on book covers.
-
A teacher who affirms a student's personal vision and offers tools and ideas to facilitate its expression.
Most recently, I have been teaching within the Faculty of Education at York University. There, I've designed and implemented a BEd-level course in Arts and Ideas in Education, created as a backgrounder in arts advocacy for artists of all disciplines who are retraining to become classroom teachers. The course includes academics and related art practices.
As Artist-in-Residence for the Faculty of Education (2001-04), I worked with more than 500 teacher candidates. I developed visual arts projects that provide opportunities for self-reflection and are adaptable for classroom use with children.
I teach adult leisure learners at the Avenue Road School of the Arts, encouraging beginners and experienced artists alike to use diverse art materials to create personal meeting in their work.
I've also worked with hundreds of elementary and secondary school students as an Artist in Education for the Ontario Arts Council and as an artist-teacher for the Royal Conservatory of Music's Learning Through The Arts initiative.
As well, I've taught undergraduate painters at Concordia University.
I hope that you'll enjoy your visit to my site, and that you'll contact me with your questions and feedback.
