[Participants' comments about my LTTA "Passport" collage project]
Remarks from Grade 7 students at Oakdale Park Middle School about my 'Passport' collage project:

"I learned that art is very important issue in life. But it is also very fun."
"I enjoyed it. It made me think of stuff that you don't normally think of everyday."
"I learned that art can be fun and that you don't have to have pencil, paper, or paint to make wonderful art."

Several students responded along these lines to the 'immigration studies' aspect of the project:

"I learned how people from other countries come here and why."
"I learned why the Loyalists moved to another country for food, shelter, clothes, etc."
"I have learned a great many things such as how to freely express feelings with art, hopefully to enhance the way people think as well. ...I would like to state that art is a great connection with the feeling inside ones heart, and art helps connect people's feelings to others. That's a pretty vibrant message."

One astute participant realized the following truth about artists and their work:

"This project was to make up someone and identify their feelings and who they are, but I think most of these collages, a part of them expresses who we are."

When asked about the benefits to her students, one of my classroom teachers responded:

"They thought about their background, family values. Students were sincerely involved in the activities and I think it encouraged them to learn more artistic skills."

About her own experience, she commented:

"It helped me to observe my students having different activities from what they do in my class.... Everything was perfect. I wish to have more programs like this."
