Auggie, Royal Standard Poodle - www.akaredhanded.com

Since July 7, 1998, I've been the very fortunate human companion to Auggie (CKC Registered Tudorose Augustus Vaughan Dog), a black male standard poodle.

He's my sidekick, my furry friend, my studio supervisor, my psychopomp. Thanks to Auggie, I enjoy a healthy daily routine -- early to bed, early to rise; hours of walks; and tasty, wholesome food (we eat pretty much the same stuff). Thanks to Auggie, I play much more than at any other time since childhood. Remember play? Purposeless, unselfconscious, joyful engagement for the sheer living hell of it? Get a dog -- particularly a large, energetic, sporting dog -- and you'll have a tireless tutor in play. An insistent instigator. A charming coaxer.

Also thanks to Auggie, I'm much more integrated into my community than ever before. A dog ensures that you're quickly on friendly terms with neighbours you never even knew you had.
