This student's talisman is a representation of her own foot. Yes, it's the means by which she plans to travel through life, hence the road map imagery on the outside surface. But the choice of the foot also secretly points to the personal self the artist evokes with the imagery that's on the work's inside skin: her actual foot has slightly webbed toes, and so, special status. As a photo including both surfaces reveals, this work uses two divergent visual styles, taking full expressive advantage of the casting's dual realities.
